Reduce Chrome memory pressure
Chrome using too much memory?
Chrome memory can climb when web apps, videos, documents and long-running pages stay loaded together. You do not have to close your whole session to get some of that memory back.
Use Chrome’s built-in checks first
Open Chrome Task Manager and sort by Memory footprint. You can also open Settings > Performance and confirm that Memory Saver is enabled. These two built-in checks solve many ordinary cases.
Find where the pressure is coming from
Run X-Ray to see loaded tabs with the clearest memory readings Chrome can provide. A few heavy pages often matter more than a long list of lightweight tabs.
Sleep background tabs in one decision
Choose tabs you want to keep for later and put them to sleep. The tabs stay visible, while active, pinned, audio and Always Awake sites remain protected.
Measure the real effect on your computer
After sleeping tabs, check Chrome Task Manager or Activity Monitor again. Results depend on the pages, extensions and computer, so use the system reading—not a promise—as the final check.
